Ahdaf soueif live streamed from Cairo

Writer, political activist and cultural commentator Ahdaf Soueif is the Eminence Grise of the Arab literary world. Over a 40-year career, she has published short stories, essays and a novel, The Map of Love, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. In 2007, Soueif founded the Palestine Festival of Literature. Samah Sabawi, a Palestinian playwright and poet, joins Soueif to discuss her oeuvre and the context of her writing.

Miriam Cosic is a Sydney-based journalist and critic, a former literary editor of The Australian, and a member of the management committee of Sydney PEN. Cosic is a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Sydney and the author of two books, Only Child and Right to Die: An Examination of the Euthanasia Debate.

Ahdaf Soueif is the author of the bestselling The Map of Love (shortlisted for the Booker Prize and translated into more than 30 languages). Her collection of essays, Mezzaterra, has been influential and her articles for The Guardian in the UK are published in the European and American press. In 2007, she co-founded the Palestine Festival of Literature, which takes place annually in occupied Palestine. Among other honours, she was awarded the first Mahmoud Darwich Award in 2010 and the European Culture Foundation Princess Margriet Award in 2019. In 2020, after serving for seven years, Ahdaf resigned from the British Museum Board of Trustees.
